OAKLAND, Calif.—Oakland officials and Alameda County prosecutors are moving to crack down on so-called "quality-of-life offenses" as they try to cut down on crime in Oakland.

During a press conference Monday, City Attorney John Russo announced the assignment of three attorneys to what he calls a "Special Prosecution Team."

The attorneys -- all former prosecutors in San Francisco -- will prosecute misdemeanors and infractions.

Officials are hoping the prosecution of lower-level offenses will lead to a reduction in violent crime.

The announcement of the initiative came a day after a 48-year-old man was shot to death Sunday night.

The fatal shooting was Oakland's 106th homicide of the year.
